Hello! My name is Carla, but everybody in Japan knows me as Kaara. I am currently a second-year master student at Kyoto University. My mother tongue is Spanish, but for the last six years I have been living abroad and studying in English, so I have achieved a native level of English. Also, I love learning languages, so I have learnt Japanese for the last six years.
I have worked officially as a Spanish and English private tutor for the last 2 years and a half. While I was studying at Sophia University (Tokyo), I worked at the 言語教育研究センター. My classes were made up by 4 to 6 students of medium to high level of Spanish and English. This was the normal flow of the lessons:
(2 hours lesson)
1. Brief discussion about what the students have done over the last week.
2. Checking homework.
3. Learning a grammar point.
4.Learning vocabulary related to one specific topic.
5.Students' presentation on an assigned topic.
6. Feedback
This was the general flow, but it was adapted according to the students' needs and interests. I like to talk with my students in the first class about what they expect to learn and which learning systems they like the most. I adapt my teaching system to each student so that the classes can be effective and fun!
I am specialized in teaching conversational English. However, due to my own experience, I can also help you with written English. I know how to use academic and business English, so I can teach you how to improve your academic reports, your business proposals, or your official letters. Also, I have experience of taking the English tests IELTS, TOEFL ibt and Cambridge ESOL. I can help you with their preparation and give you the tips that you cannot learn from books!
I truly believe that anyone can learn languages in the correct environment and with a little bit of encouragement, so I would love to support you too in your learning journey. My motto is that there are not people who are bad at languages, but bad language teachers!
Concerning my hobbies, I love learning about different cultures. I have lived in Spain, England, Germany, and Japan and during my undergrad and master I have met people from all over the world. I also like popular culture, including music, tv series, American comics, anime and manga. I think that all these resources are great materials to learn languages, so if you are interested in them we could include them in our lessons.
If you have any inquiries or you are interested in trying a first class with me, please contact me! I will be very happy to answer all your questions.
I hope you the best in your language journey!
